THE Philippine National Police will continue with the Oplan Katok, a program against unregistered firearms , amid the election period. In a press conference, Police Regional Office-Central Luzon director and the concurrent spokesperson of the Philippine National Police , Brigadier General Jean Fajardo, assured that the implementation of the Oplan Katok “is not intended to harass anyone,” noting that the subject of such operations are those gun owners with expired firearms licenses.
“Linawin lamang natin itong Oplan Katok. Alam natin na regular function as part of regulatory power and authority ng PNP, particularly kapagka meron tayong mga expired licensed, ay ang bahagi ng ginagawa nating intervention ay puntahan itong mga nag expire na licenses. So we want to assure the Comelec na hindi ito sinimulan dahil sa election. Even prior to the start ng election period ay ginagawa na natin,” she said.“So hindi intended ito na kahit sino ay kakatukin at haharasin . So meron pong particular na mga tao tayong kinakatok . So we want to assure everyone, particularly the Comelec na this is not intended to harass or coerce or intimidate anyone,” she added.Earlier, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia said the PNP should halt the implementation of Oplan Katok or ask the agency for permission for its conduct, saying that it could lead to abuse of powers by policemen amid the election season.Fajardo said the PNP is willing to sit down with the Comelec to discuss the matter. The PNP has issued a total of 621,395 notices to gun owners with expired firearms licenses in 2024. So far, 16,473 have renewed their gun licenses and 10,676 firearms were turned over for safekeeping.
