Former PBA player John Amores, facing a professional ban, pawned his infamous JRU jersey and a letter from Vice President Sara Duterte for P67,500.
Controversial Filipino basketball player John Amores recently pawned his Jose Rizal University (JRU) jersey and a letter from Vice President Sara Duterte to a prominent pawnbroker known as 'Boss Toyo' of 'Pinoy Pawnstars.' The jersey, worn during a notorious incident where Amores charged at the opposing team's bench and punched multiple players in a November 2022 NCAA Season 98 game against College of Saint Benilde, became a symbol of his reckless behavior.
Days after the incident, Vice President Duterte reached out to Amores with a letter of encouragement, assuring him of support from her office. Amores initially valued the jersey and letter combined at P200,000, but Boss Toyo, through his expertise in valuing sports memorabilia, offered a lower price. He pointed out that even a signed jersey from NBA superstar Steph Curry could be purchased within the range of P70,000 to P80,000, suggesting the controversial nature of Amores' jersey would diminish its value. After negotiations, both parties settled on a price of P67,500 for the two items. The 25-year-old Amores stated his intention to utilize the funds to establish a business while he is currently prohibited from playing in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) or any professional league. Amores' professional license was revoked by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) following a separate shooting incident after a basketball game in Lumban, Laguna, last September. He and his brother were charged with attempted homicide but were later released on bail
