Australians have been reminded to safeguard themselves against mosquitoes this summer after the first case of Japanese encephalitis was detected in New South Wales.

Japanese encephalitis is caused by bites from mosquitoes infected with the virus and can result in severe disease and death in humans. NSW Health Executive Director Dr Jeremy McAnulty said the case was a timely reminder for locals and visitors to the area to safeguard themselves from mosquito bites.
