TRANSPORTATION Secretary Vince Dizon unveiled on Wednesday a comprehensive road safety reform package, declaring a sweeping crackdown on reckless drivers and unfit vehicles amid what he called 'an unacceptable crisis on our roads.

' Speaking at a high-level press conference at the Department of Transportation headquarters, Dizon stood alongside top officials from the Land Transportation Office and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to address the alarming rise in traffic fatalities. The announcement marks a turning point in the government's approach to traffic enforcement and driver accountability. Dizon, acting on a directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., vowed that the government would no longer tolerate abusive, negligent and drug-impaired drivers. 'We will protect you from these abusive drivers,' he said, speaking directly to the riding public. 'Poprotektahan po namin kayo .' At the center of the reform package is the creation of an interagency task force that will immediately begin a thorough review of the country's driver licensing systems and vehicle inspection protocols. Dizon revealed that nearly half — 46 percent — of recent fatal road crashes involved motorcycles, a figure he called 'disturbing' and 'totally preventable.' In response, all professional drivers will soon be subject to mandatory retesting. 'We're seeing too many licensed killers on our roads,' he said. 'This stops now.' The LTO has suspended 574 driver's licenses linked to road crashes that caused injuries and deaths, and 97 more after drivers tested positive for illegal drug use. A total of 1,165 vehicles have also been flagged for safety violations. Dizon said the government is expecting new inspection equipment to arrive within two weeks, enabling authorities to detect and impound unsafe buses, trucks and public utility vehicles. 'Expect massive impounding operations,' he warned transport operators. One of the more high-profile enforcement actions was the revocation of the license of Mark Louie Burgos, a driver for ELS Bus Co. who was caught on video speeding toward La Union. Burgos had been involved in two separate road incidents in the province. Dizon used the case as a symbol of what's wrong with the system and how the government intends to fix it. He also cited a recent deadly bus crash as a trigger point for the intensified campaign, noting that it led to direct intervention from the president. 'When the president says enough is enough, we act,' Dizon said. Plans are underway to launch nightly checkpoints specifically targeting drunk and drug-impaired drivers.
