Motorcycle taxi riders in the Philippines are protesting for the end of the pilot program and the legalization of their service. They argue that motorcycle taxis provide a crucial solution to urban traffic woes and that the five-year pilot phase has provided enough data to establish a regulatory framework. Lawmakers and advocates are echoing the call for immediate legislative action, stressing the urgent need to address gaps in urban mobility.
A group of riders named Motorcycle Taxi Community Philippines protest in front of the gates of Senate of the Philippines in Pasay City on Tuesday to compel the government to end its experiment with motorcycle taxis and institutionalize their use. The motorbike taxis provide a practical solution to urban traffic woes, the group said.
“I think we can all agree that we have gathered enough data to craft a regulatory framework that is dynamic and responsive to the needs of the commuting public and the industry stakeholders. The motorcycle for hire bill has been through the long and winding road to passage. Our tank is full. It is now time to start our engines and put our years of work into motion,” she said.
At Tuesday’s hearing, Poe said it has been half a decade since the pilot implementation of motorcycle-for-hire and the pilot study is the strength of this policy. “The failure of our transportation system to address mobility challenges led to the unprecedented growth of motorcycles-for-hire.
The motorcycle taxi pilot study in the Philippines was launched in 2019 as a government initiative to evaluate the viability and safety of motorcycles-for-hire as a mode of public transportation. Key aspects of the pilot study included monitoring the safety practices, operational efficiency, and commuter satisfaction associated with motorcycle taxis.
