Tricycle drivers in the Philippines are protesting the rapid growth of motorcycle taxis, claiming it has significantly impacted their income. They are urging the government to implement regulations and consider the impact on other transportation options.
Members of the National Confederation of Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (NACTODAP) have raised concerns about the increasing number of motorcycle taxis , particularly in Metro Manila. NACTODAP national president Ariel Lim stated that tricycle drivers' daily earnings have dropped from P700 to approximately P300 due to the rise of motorcycle taxis .
Lim expressed that many members oppose the unchecked growth of motorcycle taxis, especially following the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB)'s approval of more motorcycle taxi companies in Regions 3 and 4-A. Lim appealed to the LTFRB to suspend the approval of additional motorcycle taxi companies and engage with stakeholders like NACTODAP before expanding motorcycle taxi operations. Lawyer Jopet Sison, founding chairman of the Quezon City Tricycle Franchising Board, urged the government to develop a National Transport Plan to effectively manage motorcycle taxi operations. While recognizing the faster transportation services provided by motorcycle taxis, Sison emphasized the need for proper regulation and stated that the LTFRB should prioritize regulating these services. He added that if motorcycle taxi operations are adequately regulated and monitored nationwide, other passenger transport options, such as tricycles, would not be negatively affected. NACTODAP clarified that they have no plans to request a fare increase from local government units (LGUs) to avoid burdening ordinary workers who are already struggling to meet their daily needs
