A pain in Jen Bishop’s elbow “got a lot worse very quickly”. She spent eight days in ICU and underwent five surgeries to clear the deadly infection necrotising fasciitis in her arm.
Invasive bacterial illnesses requiring urgent care have increased recently and in their early stages can mimic symptoms of viral infections like COVID-19 and influenza, NSW Health isJen Bishop thought her stomach cramps were just a stomach bug, but when she noticed a pain in her elbow, a “gut instinct” kicked in and she called the free HealthDirect service for advice. They told her to go straight to a hospital.
“It was very much contained to the elbow area at that stage but the pain got a lot worse very quickly, and I was feeling dizzy. My gut instinct told me to call HealthDirect for advice and they told me to go to emergency.” Executive Director of Health Protection NSW Dr Richard Broome said cases of both meningococcal disease and invasive group A streptococcus infections have increased recently and while rare, both can cause death or permanent disability.
