Mariam Raad, 31, returned to Australia last October after spending time in Al Roj Internally Displaced Persons camp in Syria.
One of the so-called “ISIS brides” who were brought to Australia last year from Syria has been arrested and charged with previously entering and remaining in areas that were controlled by the Islamic State group.
“It will be alleged in court that the woman, who is now living in Young, travelled to Syria in early 2014 to join her husband, who left Australia in 2013 and joined Islamic State,” the Australian Federal Police and NSW Police said in a joint statement. Raad was married to Muhammad Zahab, a former Sydney maths teacher who rose through the ranks to become the most senior Australian fighter in the multinational Islamic State group.Members of the couple’s extended family were also recruited from Australia into the Islamic State Group.Advertisement
