Volvo Cars is at the forefront of transforming automotive production, showcasing how responsible material sourcing and advanced engineering can drive a more sustainable future. The company is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, taking a holistic approach to reducing its carbon footprint across the entire value chain.
A key pillar of this strategy is the full electrification of its vehicle lineup, with the introduction of models like the EX90, EX30, and EM90 in 2023. Beyond electrification, Volvo actively embraces a circular economy by minimizing the use of primary resources and maximizing material reuse. They remanufactures 36 different component groups, including engines, gearboxes, turbo compressors, and clutches, preventing more than 4,800 tonnes of CO₂ emissions in 2022 alone. Volvo also advocates for policies and supports the plastic industry in their transformation. They actively promote incorporating recycled materials in vehicle components, support closed-loop recycling, and engage in research to advance eco-friendly plastics. Volvo uses mechanically and chemically recycled plastic materials as well as bio-based materials in manufacturing processes. Their dedication to sustainability extends beyond vehicle design. Volvo has launched several initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact, such as recycling programs that repurpose plastic waste from production and vehicle repairs. For instance, in Sweden, Volvo has initiated a bumper recycling program that aims to recover and reuse 150 tons of plastic annually. This circular approach not only minimizes waste but also reduces reliance on virgin plastic materials, further contributing to sustainability goals. Further solidifying this commitment, Volvo partnered with Manila Bulletin—an institution equally devoted to sustainability and innovation—to celebrate individuals making a meaningful impact on the country. The 2025 Manila Bulletin Newsmakers of the Year Awards recognized remarkable figures who have contributed to groundbreaking advancements in their respective fields. Among them was Dr. Noel Peter Tan, whose pioneering research in development of biodegradable packaging through nanotechnology. Dr. Tan, a medium-term Balik Scientist under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), leads the Center for Advanced New Materials, Engineering, and Emerging Technologies (CANMEET) at the University of San Agustin in Iloilo. His work focuses on developing an alternative bioplastic with enhanced mechanical properties suitable for packaging applications, providing a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic waste. Through nanotechnology, his research aims to address one of the world’s most pressing environmental concerns—plastic pollution. Recognizing Dr. Tan’s outstanding contributions, Manila Bulletin and Volvo honored him at the Newsmakers of the Year Awards held on February 10, 2025, at The Tent City, Manila Hotel.
