MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority is considering the eventual removal of the EDSA Busway as part of a broader effort to improve traffic flow in Metro Manila. MMDA Chairman Romando Artes announced on Wednesday that the proposal aligned with plans to enhance the capacity of the Metro Rail Transit system, which would serve as an alternative means of mass transportation for commuters currently relying on buses.
He said increasing the number of train coaches and reducing waiting times would help absorb displaced commuters should the busway be phased out.The EDSA Busway, introduced in 2020 as a response to worsening traffic congestion and the need for an organized public transport system, has since become a crucial component of Metro Manila's daily commute. The exclusive lane, running along the innermost part of EDSA, has facilitated faster bus travel by reducing conflicts with private vehicles.
