MANILA, Philippines— The city of Valenzuela fined over a hundred traders and vendors for using defective weighing scales, Mayor Weslie Gatchalian said.
Gatchalian led the enforcement of 'Operation Timbangan' at Karuhatan Market where officials confiscated and destroyed the defective weighing devices.Officials conducted surprise inspections in various public markets last week. At least 130 vendors found to be using defective weighing scales were each fined P5,000.
'This is just one way of strengthening our commitment to consumer rights and market integrity as well as promoting fairness in trade,' he said.Republic Act 11706 or the 'Timbangan ng Bayan Act,' mandates the establishment of Timbangan ng Bayan Centers in public and private markets to provide consumers with a means of verifying weighing instruments.Violators of the law may face penalties ranging from ₱50,000 to ₱300,000, imprisonment of one to five years, or both.
