A toxic algae bloom outbreak has prompted a pre-Christmas warning to revellers not to consume shellfish collected or caught in the Broken Bay area over concerns it could lead to paralytic shellfish poisoning. 7NEWS
The currently affected area includes the waters of Broken Bay upstream to Cowan Creek, the coastal zone between Little Beach and Bangalley Headland and Pittwater. The NSW Department of Primary Industries advises that recreationally caught shellfish shouldn’t be eaten because the algal toxins are harmful to humans.
Symptoms of PSP can include numbness and a tingling, prickly feeling around the mouth, face, and extremities, difficulty swallowing or breathing, dizziness and headaches, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, paralysis, respiratory failure and in severe cases, death. “Seafood available for purchase in shops and restaurants is safe to eat because the NSW Food Authority monitors the safety of commercially harvested shellfish,” Tracey said.
