The businesswoman was excited to do her Christmas shopping in one hit, snapping up shoes, towels and leather bags normally retailing for $500 for just $52.“I defy anyone to resist those sorts of prices just prior to Christmas,” Murphy said.The ACCC says the new scam involves slick fraudsters using social media platforms to set up fake online stores that look genuine.
The sophisticated sites use stolen photos and logos, fleecing unsuspecting shoppers of thousands of dollars. The advertisements boast clearance sales and discounts of up to 80 per cent, but their other red flags are the suspicious looking links, and the fact there is no option to select payments methods such as Afterpay and Zip Pay.
