Drivers in Mandaue are protesting against a proposed ban on e-bikes, a crucial part of their livelihood, as the city considers alternative transportation options.

Drivers of electric bikes (e-bikes) in the Municipality of Mandaue are protesting the proposed ban on e-bikes across the city due to their significant impact on their livelihood. John Lawrence Tayo, a driver and owner of e-bikes, told reporters on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, that the ban could affect his ability to support his family since driving e-bikes is his main source of income. 'If this ban happens, we might have to go back to tricycles, but we are not ready for that,' he said.

Tayo and other drivers are appealing to the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (TEAM) to consider the importance of e-bikes in their daily lives. Other drivers have expressed financial concerns, having bought their e-bikes for around P30,000 and paying P250 daily in installments, earning around P500 to P600 daily. 'If this happens, we lose our main source of income,' said driver Junior Etgano. E-bikes can carry up to four passengers and charge for P10 per ride, though a full battery charge can take 8 to 10 hours, adding to operational costs. In Barangay Paknaan and Opao, 40 and 20 e-bikes respectively are operating as a vital means of transportation. Many drivers switched to e-bikes during the pandemic to address the increased demand for transport. For commuters like Mary Jane Gonzales, e-bikes are essential for daily travel. 'They are cheap and comfortable, especially for places where jeepneys are not available,' she said
