The Philippines celebrates a major victory for its fisheries sector as the tamban (Sardinella lemuru) species is officially recognized in the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) standard for canned sardines. This inclusion paves the way for increased trade and market access, particularly in Europe, where previous export challenges stemmed from tamban's misidentification.

The inclusion of the sardine species tamban (Sardinella lemuru) in the international food standards body, the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), is expected to significantly boost the Philippines' fisheries sector. This landmark event, achieved after years of effort, eliminates trade barriers and enhances global market access for Philippine canned sardines, particularly in major markets like Europe.

The DA explained that tamban had been frequently misidentified as another sardine species in the past, leading to confusion and rejection of Philippine shipments by European Union authorities. This misidentification, which began to be flagged in 2013, created a major challenge for the Philippine sardine industry, resulting in lost export opportunities and substantial financial losses. To address this issue, the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) initiated several projects aimed at scientifically validating tamban's distinct characteristics and securing its inclusion in international product standards. In 2020, the Philippines formally submitted a proposal to the Codex Secretariat to include tamban in the Codex Standard for Canned Sardines and Sardine-Type Products (CXS 94-1981). The proposal received strong support from the international community, including Norway, which recommended the Philippines lead an Electronic Working Group (EWG) to compile comprehensive scientific evidence. This evidence underwent rigorous technical and sensory evaluation, ultimately leading to the amendment's adoption on November 27, 2024. This inclusion aligns Philippine sardine products with global standards, ensuring compliance with EU regulations and paving the way for the expansion into new export markets. The DA emphasized that this achievement underscores the Philippines' commitment to innovation, quality, and global competitiveness in the seafood market. It solidifies the country's position as a reliable supplier of premium sardine products and a key player on the international stage
