The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) has officially recognized the tamban sardine species (Sardinella lemuru) caught in Philippine waters, paving the way for increased exports to Europe.

The international food standards body Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) has officially recognized the sardine species tamban (Sardinella lemuru, or Bali sardinella) — which is caught in Philippine waters — as part of the Codex Standard for Canned Sardines and Sardine-Type Products (CXS 94-1981). This recognition opens up export opportunities to major markets like Europe .

The development will eliminate trade barriers, enhance global market access, and allow the Philippines to gain a stronger position in the sardine industry. \In 2013, researchers discovered that Sardinella lemuru had often been misidentified as another sardine species, leading to confusion. This became problematic when European Union authorities rejected canned sardine shipments from the Philippines because Sardinella lemuru was not listed on their product standards. This rejection resulted in missed export opportunities, costing the local industry valuable market access. \To address this issue, the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute lobbied to include Sardinella lemuru on the list of authorized species for export to the EU and global markets. In 2020, the Philippines submitted a proposal for the formal inclusion of Sardinella lemuru into the Codex Standard. This proposal was discussed at the 43rd CAC session, where Philippine representatives were asked to provide scientific evidence to support their request. After undergoing evaluation and receiving broad support, the proposal was finally adopted after several years of review
