The Philippine Senate has given its final approval to a bill that would significantly alter the electoral landscape at the local level by extending the terms of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials from three to four years. The bill, SB 2816, was championed by Senator Bong Go, who emphasized its potential to bring stability and continuity to local governance. This measure, alongside other legislative proposals, reflects Senator Go's commitment to empowering grassroots leaders and strengthening community-based services.
The Senate has approved on third and final reading a bill that would implement a four-year term for barangay officials and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) members. Senator Bong Go, a co-author of Senate Bill (SB) 2816, strongly supported the legislation, emphasizing its potential to bring stability and continuity to local governance . SB 2816 proposes that the terms of barangay and SK officials be four years while limiting them to three consecutive terms.
It also ensures that the next regular elections for these officials will be held in October 2027, with subsequent elections scheduled every four years. During the Senate session on Tuesday, Go reminded barangay and SK officials of their duty to serve their constituents. As chairman of the Senate Committee on Youth, Go underscored the measure's potential to empower young leaders and foster civic engagement. Extending their term allows them to maximize their contributions to youth development and nation-building, he said. Go thanked Senator Imee Marcos, the bill's principal sponsor, 'for pushing this significant measure that will surely be of great help to our fellow Filipinos.' Go's other priority legislative proposals include SB 197, or the Magna Carta for Barangay Officials. If enacted, the bill will provide barangay officials with significant benefits and privileges. He also filed SB 427, the Barangay Health Workers Compensation Act, which seeks to guarantee fair compensation for barangay health workers who play a pivotal role in community health services
