More than 150 false killer whales have become stranded on a remote beach in Tasmania, Australia. Marine experts are working to determine the best course of action, but the challenging conditions and location are making the situation difficult.

More than 150 false killer whales were stranded on a remote beach in Australia 's island state of Tasmania on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. Marine experts, including veterinarians, were dispatched to the scene near Arthur River on Tasmania 's northwest coast. Of the 157 beached whales, only 90 appeared to be alive.

Authorities faced challenges in responding to the stranding due to the beach's inaccessibility, ocean conditions, and difficulties in transporting specialized equipment to the remote area. Officials were unsure if any of the whales, which can weigh between 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) and 3 metric tons (3.3 U.S. tons), could be refloated. The department's liaison officer, Brendon Clark, stated that attempting to return the animals directly into the surf would be challenging and pose significant safety risks to personnel. Experts on site were working to determine the most suitable and humane method to address this complex situation.Clark highlighted that this stranding was the first by false killer whales in Tasmania since 1974, when a pod of over 160 whales beached near Stanley. Strandings in Tasmania are typically pilot whales. Clark refrained from speculating on the reasons behind the latest stranding, but indicated that the carcasses of deceased whales would be examined for clues. The whales were discovered on Tuesday afternoon, and a helicopter survey revealed no other whales within a 10-kilometer (6-mile) radius of the stranded pod. A local resident, Jocelyn Flint, stated that her son had found the whales around midnight while fishing for shark. She visited the scene in the early morning hours but deemed refloating the whales impossible due to their size and the surge of water.Tasmania has experienced notable mass strandings in recent years. In 2022, 230 pilot whales became stranded at Macquarie Harbor further south on the west coast. The largest mass stranding in Australian history occurred in the same harbor in 2020, when 470 long-finned pilot whales were trapped on sandbars. In both instances, most of the stranded whales perished. The exact causes of these strandings remain unclear, but potential factors include disorientation from loud noises, illness, old age, injury, fleeing predators, and severe weather
