A battle within the factions of the NSW Liberals over winnable positions in the state's Upper House deepens as factional powerbrokers intervene.
abc.net.au/news/nsw-liberals-preselection-anger-three-women-in-winnable-spots/101804190Tensions are high within the New South Wales Liberals over the premier's intervention to have three women in winnable spots on the Upper House ticket for the state election.
Many moderates are angry that its dominant faction is down from three to two positions at the top of the ticket and were pushing for Dominic Perrottet to revisit the deal struck by factional powerbrokers yesterday. Under the deal, three conservative male MPs will be dumped — Upper House president Matthew Mason-Cox, Lou Amato and Shayne Mallard — to ensure gender parity in winnable positions.
Families and Communities Minister Natasha Maclaren-Jones will lead the ticket and then two new conservative women, Susan Carter and Jean Haynes have been put forward. Ms Maclaren-Jones still has another four years of her current term and her vacancy is likely to be filled by one of the outgoing male MPs who missed out on a spot, taking the net female gain for the Liberals back by one.
