NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has taken drastic action to get more women into the state’s upper house, brokering a deal to drop three male MPs to make way for a ticket with equal numbers of men and women.that found most women preferred Labor in all ages from 18 to 55-plus, the NSW executive will be asked to endorse a Legislative Council ticket selected with gender parity in mind.
Changing the guard: NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet is taking drastic action to change the perception of the Liberals as a blokes-only affair.Under the plan, existing upper house MP Natasha Maclaren-Jones will lead the ticket with two new female candidates including lawyer Sue Carter and former school teacher Jean Haynes given winnable slots. Other incumbents Chris Rath, Peter Poulos and Scott Farlow will make up the remainder of the ticket.
Critically, one-time Legislative Council president Matthew Mason-Cox and MPs Shayne Mallard and Lou Amato will lose their positions and will leave parliament at the state election in March. The action comes as Perrottet and the party’s executive attempt to stop the number of women in the Liberals’ state parliamentary team from diminishing, following a slew of preselections where female candidates were overlooked in favour of men.
