The Meralco Bolts delivered a resounding 111-94 victory over the top-seeded NorthPort Batang Pier in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Tuesday, January 14. Veteran point guard Chris Banchero led the Bolts with a conference-high 25 points on an efficient 10-of-15 shooting, complemented by 4 rebounds and 6 assists. Their import, Akil Mitchell , also contributed a double-double of 30 points and 13 rebounds.
Meralco's head coach Luigi Trillo acknowledged NorthPort's impressive performance throughout the conference, but emphasized the Bolts' strong defensive effort in limiting the Batang Pier to their lowest scoring output. They also held NorthPort to a rough 3-of-16 shooting from beyond the arc, while the Bolts connected on 11-of-31 three-pointers. Banchero and Mitchell dominated the first half, scoring 14 and 15 points respectively, giving Meralco a 54-44 lead at halftime. NorthPort managed to close the gap to 6 points in the third quarter, but Meralco's offense continued to fire, extending their lead to as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter.NorthPort's import Kadeem Jack put up a valiant effort with 29 points and 14 rebounds, while Arvin Tolentino and Joshua Munzon added 19 and 12 points respectively. However, the Batang Pier struggled from the field, shooting a combined 7-of-21. Meralco's stifling defense proved too much for NorthPort to overcome, resulting in their second loss of the conference.
