Supporters of former Mandaue City mayor Jonas Cortes have launched a city-wide prayer movement seeking his reinstatement after his dismissal by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Supporters of dismissed Mandaue City mayor Jonas Cortes have initiated a city-wide prayer brigade, with each barangay participating in the initiative as a show of solidarity and faith. The movement, led by the community leaders of each of the 27 barangays in the City, seeks a favorable ruling from the Supreme Court regarding the dismissal of the mayor, revealed Ernie Manatad, former executive assistant of Cortes, who is running for city councilor.Manatad said on Wednesday, Jan.

8, 2025, the prayer brigade began on the evening of Jan. 6 and will continue nightly until the Supreme Court delivers its decision on Jan. 14. During these prayer sessions, residents gather in their respective barangays to pray for justice, peace, and the reinstatement of Cortes. “It’s just a way for us to boost morale and maintain faith that justice will prevail,” said Manatad. The prayer sessions consist of rosary prayers, gospel readings, and sharing among participants, he added. Some barangays have also organized candlelight vigils and other activities in solidarity with the movement. While the prayer brigade is expected to continue until the Supreme Court delivers its verdict, Manatad said that they remain flexible and open to adjusting the initiative based on the community’s decision. Activities are held in various venues such as chapels, gyms, or open spaces to accommodate large groups.“The prayer brigade reflects the deep connection the community feels with Cortes and their desire for a resolution that they believe aligns with justice and fairness,” said Manatad. This initiative comes after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc issued a certificate of finality on Jan. 3, 2025, declaring its earlier decision to dismiss Cortes as final and executory. The ruling stemmed from allegations of material misrepresentation by Cortes, who reportedly failed to disclose his dismissal from public service in his certificate of candidacy (COC)
