Supporters of dismissed Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes launched a city-wide prayer brigade while awaiting the Supreme Court 's decision regarding a petition filed by the former mayor on January 2 to reinstate his eligibility to run in the upcoming May elections. The initiative was led by community leaders from 27 barangays in the city who hope for a favorable Supreme Court ruling on the mayor's dismissal, according to Ernie Manatad on Wednesday, January 8.
Manatad, a former executive assistant to Cortes, also aims to run for councilor in the next election. Manatad said the prayer brigade, which began on the night of January 6, will continue each night until January 14, the date when the Supreme Court is expected to release its decision. During the prayer sessions, residents gather in their respective barangays to pray for justice, peace, and Cortes' return to office. 'This is just one way to uplift the morale of the community and continue our faith that justice will prevail,' Manatad said. 'The prayer brigade demonstrates the deep connection of the community to Cortes and their desire for a resolution they believe is fair and just,' he added. The activities held in various locations, such as chapels, gyms, and open spaces, include rosary prayers, readings from the Gospel, and sharing of experiences by participants. Some barangays also organized candlelight vigils and other activities to show solidarity with the initiative. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc declared on January 3, 2025, that its decision to dismiss Cortes was final and executory
