Mandaue City in the Philippines is upgrading its traffic management system by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its traffic lights. The goal is to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and create a more efficient transportation system.
Mandaue City is taking a significant step towards becoming a smart city by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its traffic management system. The city aims to install AI-powered traffic lights at all 14 intersections, starting with the Pacific Mall intersection on UN Avenue. This project is driven by the need to address the growing challenges of urban mobility, as traffic congestion intensifies with an increasing population and number of vehicles.
The new AI-assisted traffic lights will utilize radar-based sensors to monitor real-time vehicle volume. This data will allow the AI system to dynamically adjust signal timings, optimizing the duration of green, yellow, and red lights based on actual traffic flow. Sensors will be strategically placed half a kilometer from each intersection to anticipate and respond to approaching traffic.Unlike the current fixed-timer system, which follows a predetermined duration regardless of traffic conditions, the AI-powered system will respond dynamically to the number of vehicles present at any given moment. This will result in smoother traffic flow and reduced waiting times for motorists. The city recognizes the importance of this upgrade in alleviating congestion and improving the efficiency of its transportation network. To support this initiative, several physical and operational changes have been implemented at the Pacific Mall intersection. The pedestrian refuge island in front of Pacific Mall has been removed to allow for better vehicle movement, and the traffic light has been relocated to improve visibility and optimize signal operation. The intersection now features four southbound lanes, with two lanes designated for vehicles heading towards Cebu City and two lanes allocated for left turns towards Lapu-Lapu City. Vehicles heading to Consolacion and northern areas are now required to use the bridge above the Butuanon River to ease congestion. While the transition to AI-driven traffic lights presents numerous benefits, it also comes with challenges. Many existing traffic lights in the city are malfunctioning or outdated, necessitating the upgrade. Before the AI system can be fully activated, the city must install traffic sensors, cement new lane markers, and reposition dividers, a process that will take several weeks.Retuya confirmed that the physical setup, including the installation of signages, movable barricades, and traffic control devices, is already underway at the Pacific Mall intersection, while the AI software and sensors will be the last components to be installed. The Pacific Mall intersection serves as the pilot phase for this project. Mandaue City plans to roll out AI-driven traffic lights at all intersections with existing traffic lights, aiming for full implementation in the coming months across all 14 intersections in the city
