The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Wednesday clarified that the 60-day deadline it imposed to get unclaimed license plates is meant for agency officials and car dealers–not owners.

"It is actually a directive to all our Regional Directors, District Chiefs, Offices and Extension Offices to find the best ways to properly and efficiently distribute the unclaimed license plates within 60 days," LTO Chief Vigor Mendoza said in a statement.Vigor explained that the order is"not intended for the motor vehicle owners because it's the LTO's mandate to issue plates.

Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista earlier directed the LTO to start the distribution of license plates so vehicle owners can claim these. Mendoza said the agency is targeting to finish the distribution by September. The Commission on Audit has reported that 1.79 million pairs of license plates remain unclaimed. These are replacement plates that were already paid for by car owners upon renewal of vehicle registrations.
