Voyageur Trail Association seeks volunteers to help maintain Sault-area hiking trails, coordinated response with emergency services after hiker loses way on local trail
The president of the Voyageur Trail Association says immediate action is being taken to repair a two-kilometre stretch of trail in Sault Ste. Marie after a lost hiker triggered a rescue effort by police over the weekend.
The Saulteaux Voyageur Trail Club appealed to the public on social media Tuesday evening, asking for volunteers to help with maintenance on the Saulteaux Trail near Peoples Road. “That’s one of our issues: the Saulteaux club that has trails from Sault Ste. Marie into Goulais River. There’s a large club down there, but there’s very few volunteers that actually go and help out to clear the trail,” Borutski said. “We’re a fully volunteer organization from one end to the other.”
Those tools, Borutski says, should be provided to emergency responders as well. He also believes there needs to be a plan in place so that trail association members can assist emergency services should hikers lose their way. The Voyageur Trail Association is encouraging all members to contact their respective clubs when issues on the trails arise, as conditions can change quickly.
