Sometimes you need to go east to head west
The sun was setting when I finally arrived in Rocky Harbour, the largest community in Gros Morne National Park. I had never started a fire with a flint before and it wasn’t easy. Payne kept saying “less is more” as I banged the flint against a stone. Sparks flew everywhere except the place I wanted them to. Next, we made Bannock bread and cooked it over the fire with some fish and moose meat. It was an Indigenous style feast and I imagined what it would have been like hundreds of years ago when Indigenous people cooked over open fires in this same spot.
We continued along the Viking Trail to L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site, the place where Greenlanders and Icelanders led by Leif Ericsson founded the first European settlement in North America — 500 years before Columbus “discovered” the New World. This UNESCO World Heritage site was discovered by Helge Ingstad and his archeologist wife Anne Stine Ingstad in 1960.
