India strengthens its maritime security with the simultaneous launch of a submarine, destroyer, and frigate, highlighting the country's growing naval power and its commitment to safeguarding the Indian Ocean region.

India 's navy on Wednesday launched a submarine, a destroyer, and a frigate built at a state-run shipyard, highlighting the nation's commitment to safeguarding the India n Ocean region. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized the shift in global geopolitics, stating that the India n Ocean has become a focal point of international power rivalry, with 95% of India 's trade passing through it.

The commissioning ceremony, held at the Mazagon dockyard in Mumbai, was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hailed the event as a significant step towards India's ambition of becoming a global leader in defense manufacturing and maritime security. The INS Vagsheer submarine, the sixth in the French license-built Kalvari (Scorpene)-class, is designed to replace aging Indian underwater platforms and address existing capability gaps. This submarine, along with the other vessels launched, reflects India's growing expertise in naval construction, particularly in collaboration with the French Naval Group. The P75 Scorpene submarine project signifies India's advancement in this field. Defense analyst Rahul Bedi noted that the Chinese navy, India's primary rival, is expanding rapidly, making the Indian Ocean region increasingly challenging. To counter this growing presence, India commissioned its first home-built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, in 2022. This second operational aircraft carrier, joining the Soviet-era INS Vikramaditya acquired from Russia in 2004, strengthens India's naval capabilities in the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal. The Indian defense ministry is expected to finalize a deal for three additional Scorpene submarines to be built in India during Prime Minister Modi's visit to Paris next month. However, the first of these submarines is not anticipated to be commissioned until 2031
