FISHERMEN recovered on Monday, December 30, 2024, a submarine drone in the waters off San Pascual in Masbate. Police Regional Office-Bicol Director Brigadier General Andre Dizon said the submarine drone with “HY119” markings was fished out by the fishermen in the waters off Barangay Iniwaran and was immediately turned over to the police.Dizon said based on research, the equipment, which belongs to China, is an underwater communication and surveillance system.
In a separate statement on Thursday, January 2, 2025, Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of the Public Affairs Office Colonel Xerxes Trinidad confirmed that the remotely operated submersible drone has already been turned over to the Philippine Navy for the conduct of further investigation to determine its origin and purpose.“This incident underscores the importance of collaboration with local fisherfolk and maritime stakeholders.
