The DOH reported four deaths and 534 injuries from firecracker-related incidents during the New Year's celebration.
FOUR individuals were reported dead due to firecrackers-related incidents, Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said Thursday, January 2, 2025. In a press conference, Herbosa said among the fatalities was a 78-year-old man from Nueva Ecija, who was injured by the explosion of firecracker, Sinturon ni Hudas on December 22. The victim succumbed to injuries he sustained on December 27. Herbosa said the three other fatalities are still under validation.
Based on reports, a 44-year-old man in Dagupan City and two individuals from Cebu province died due to fireworks-related injuries. From December 22, 2024 to January 2, 2025, the DOH recorded a total of 534 firecracker-related injuries across the country. The number of cases is 9.8 percent lower than the cases recorded in the same period last year. Of the 534 recorded injuries, 322 were 19 years old and below while 212 were 20 years old and above. A total of 443 victims were male while 91 were female. The DOH said kwitis caused most of the recorded injuries followed by boga, 5-star and whistle bomb. The agency also recorded 577 road traffic incidents, 33.5 percent higher than the recorded cases during the same period last year, These incidents resulted in the death of six individuals, four of which were due to motorcycle accidents. Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) recorded 30 cases of indiscriminate discharge of firearms. The number of arrested individuals related to indiscriminate firing was at 24, four in Metro Manila, nine in Calabarzon, three in Bicol, two each in Davao and Cagayan Valley, and one each in Central Luzon, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas and Zamboanga Peninsula. The PNP also recorded 14 stray bullets, which resulted in injuries to eight individuals, particularly in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Central Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Soccsksargen and Cordilleras.
