A coalition of migrant groups is demanding action from the Philippine government to aid Filipino migrant workers caught in the crossfire of mass arrests and deportations of undocumented immigrants in the United States under the Trump administration. The organizations assert that the DFA's denial of any Filipino arrests is inaccurate, citing testimonies from healthcare workers in Chicago who allege ICE apprehension.

An alliance of migrant groups is urging the Philippine government to provide support to Filipino migrant workers impacted by the mass arrests and deportations of undocumented immigrants in the United States under the Trump administration.

During a virtual press conference on Thursday (Philippine time), Tanggol Migrante refuted the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA)'s claim that no undocumented Filipinos have been apprehended, citing accounts from healthcare workers in Chicago who allegedly faced arrest by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Nerissa Allegretti, president of the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON) US, asserted that Chicago has become the epicenter of these mass deportations. She revealed that eight healthcare workers were recently detained by ICE, with six being deported within 24 hours without a judicial warrant. Allegretti emphasized the need for the Philippine government to take concrete action, stating, 'We want the Filipino government to take action. There are a lot of nice reports from the newspapers. Compared to what we’re doing right now, there’s a disparity… I expect more from the Philippine government while we face this situation.'On Wednesday, DFA spokesperson, de Vega, maintained that Filipinos who were deported were already under US custody prior to President Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20. He clarified that deportation orders are solely issued against undocumented immigrants with criminal records. 'A handful have been sent home, but their cases were pending, and they were under US custody already even before Trump took over,' de Vega stated to GMA News Online. He further explained that current deportations target undocumented aliens with criminal records or pending criminal cases. Philippine Ambassador to the United States, Jose Manuel Romualdez, confirmed his collaboration with Filipino-American lawyers from the Filipino American Legal Defense and Education Fund (FALDEF) to provide legal aid. He encouraged undocumented Filipinos to remain hopeful, particularly those with clean records and years of service in the US. However, he acknowledged that it might primarily benefit Filipinos who overstayed their tourist visas. 'Those people who have been working here and paying taxes probably have a better chance of staying,' he remarked. The Department of Labor and Employment announced their preparedness to offer assistance to Filipinos facing deportation as a result of the immigration crackdown.
