Unranked Filipino-Swede Marc Pfister and Filipino-American Kathleen Dubberstein pulled off a stunning upset, defeating both world No. 3 South Korea and world No. 45 Kyrgyzstan in the mixed doubles curling event at the Ninth Asian Winter Games in Harbin, China. The victory marks a strong start for Team Philippines in their curling debut and has boosted morale for the entire team.

THE unranked pair of Filipino-Swede Marc Pfister and Filipino-American Kathleen Dubberstein upset world No. 3 and Asia’s top seed South Korea, 12-6, on Tuesday morning and came back in the afternoon to beat world No. 45 Kyrgyzstan, 10-2, in curling’s mixed doubles event for a statement-making start in the Ninth Asian Winter Games in Harbin.

“It’s morale boosting ahead of this Friday’s opening ceremony and I hope we stay this way,” added Tolentino, who will rendezvous with chef de mission Ricky Lim and host a team dinner with the 20-athlete Team Philippines on Thursday. Eleven countries are seeing action in the mixed doubles event and were divided into two groups—Philippines, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Chinese-Taipei are in Group A and host China, Hong Kong, Japan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Thailand are in Group B.
