Barry Gutierrez, a former party-list representative and human rights lawyer, stated that Vice President Sara Duterte's exclusion from the National Security Council (NSC) was a consequence of her threats against the President, First Lady, and House Speaker. Gutierrez argued that Duterte's controversial remarks constituted a risk to national security. This statement followed lawyer Salvador Panelo's criticism of Duterte's removal, accusing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of 'dirty politics'. Panelo also highlighted a past incident where then-Vice President Leni Robredo was barred from Cabinet meetings due to 'irreconcilable differences' with the administration.
Former party-list representative and human rights lawyer Barry Gutierrez said Vice President Sara Duterte’s removal from the National Security Council was an outcome she brought upon herself when she threatened the life of the President, the First Lady and the House Speaker.
He also recounted how in December 2016, Robredo received a text message from Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco Jr., conveying President Duterte’s instruction, through his executive assistant Bong Go, for her “to desist from attending all Cabinet meetings” starting December 5.” National Security Adviser Eduardo Año, for his part, said that the NSC revamp as detailed in Executive Order 81 released by Malacañang on Friday, was necessary to address “evolving national security threats.”
“If you see people on social media expressing their gripes, these are probably retired members of the Armed Forces, there are no incumbent military officials that don’t support the chain of command,” he added. In a letter addressed to Camarines Sur Rep. Gabriel Bordado, the bloc stated that it intends to convince the Marcos administration and the Lower House to hold Duterte accountable.
