Salvador Panelo, former presidential legal counsel, slams President Marcos' decision to remove Vice President Sara Duterte from the National Security Council, calling it 'ill-advised' and 'smelling of dirty politics'.
Former chief presidential legal counsel and Palace spokesperson Salvador Panelo on Saturday criticized President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s decision to remove Vice President Sara Duterte from the National Security Council (NSC). “The removal of VP Sara as member of the National Security Council is an ill-advised presidential move,” Panelo said.“It smacks of dirty politics. Another brazen measure to diminish the political star power of VP Sara,” he added.
Panelo further suggested the removal of former presidents from the NSC, including former presidents Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Joseph Estrada, was a strategic attempt to “deodorize” the move and make it seem like the VP was not being specifically targeted. The decision to remove Duterte from the NSC has sparked controversy, especially amid reports of a falling-out between her and Marcos despite their joint UniTeam campaign in the 2022 elections. This also came in the wake of the Vice President’s recent remarks about hiring someone to “kill” the President, as well as First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and Speaker Martin Romualdez, in the event of her untimely death. Responding to this, the NSC said “any threats to the President are taken seriously and are seen as a national security issue.” It also vowed to investigate the threats against the First Family
