A new study suggests that persons with COVID-19 are most infectious on or before the onset of their symptoms.

The study published April 15 in Nature Medicine stated that viral shedding begins “two to three days before the appearance of the first symptoms.”Based on the 414 throat swabs of 94 patients from Guangzhou Eighth People’s Hospital in China, the study found out that viral loads — which SkyNews defined as “the total amount of a virus a person has inside of them” — were highest “at the time of symptom onset.

The study also showed that about 44 percent of secondary cases were “infected during the index cases’ pre-symptomatic stage, in settings with substantial household clustering, active case finding, and quarantine outside the home.” In conclusion, the study suggested that ”a substantial proportion of transmission probably occurred before first symptoms in the index case.”

A study in Germany also had the same findings, stating that COVID-19 carriers “emit high amounts of virus very early on in their infection.”
