The Ross Creek Centre for the Arts is transforming a former Catholic church with the vision of creating an accessible, inclusive gathering space for Canning and beyond. | SaltWire

Ross Creek Centre for the Arts executive director Chris O’Neill at the former St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Canning, which is currently being renovated to establish The Annex. - Kirk StarrattCANNING, N.S. — The Ross Creek Centre for the Arts is transforming a former Catholic church with the vision of creating an accessible, inclusive gathering space for Canning and beyond.

The Annex will be a unique facility in the Annapolis Valley. The vision is for a welcoming, inclusive, accessible, space that offers the types of arts-related activities and events that people would usually only find in major cities. “We’re really excited about what this could do, not to replace anything that we do up at our main spot , but to add to it so we can serve the community even better,” O’Neill said.

O’Neill said their mission is arts and culture, and when it comes to achieving that mission, they consider equity, diversity, and inclusion as much as possible. This includes ensuring that programs are accessible to everyone regardless of economic status, and environmental sustainability. Thanks to a generous gift, the former St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Canning is being renovated for the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts. It will be called The Annex, an accessible, inclusive arts hub and gathering space. - Kirk StarrattO’Neill said they want to work with partners who can bring a knowledge of their disciplines to the table. They are an arts organization, but music, for example, hasn’t been among their specialties.

She said they are already planning concerts, jam sessions, after school ukulele, and Sunday brunches where families can listen to music while they eat together, and their kids play. They also hold dances and lead workshops for all community members, especially those who are marginalized or vulnerable and can benefit the most from music in all kinds of ways.

Barlow said contemporary society can be isolating. It’s easy to fall into routines where residents live near each other but never interact. Barlow said there is no other facility like it in the area. With Ross Creek’s grassroots, community-based approach, it will be one-of-a-kind in terms of public access to the resources that will be offered and the potential uses.
