The Senate has approved a bill to postpone the first-ever elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) from May 12, 2025, to October 13, 2025. Those who have already filed their candidacy for the original date will automatically be recognized as candidates for the new date.

The Senate approved on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, the bicameral conference committee report on a bill that aims to reschedule the first-ever elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao ( BARMM ). Instead of taking place on May 12, 2025, concurrently with the 2025 national and local elections, the BARMM polls have been moved to October 13, 2025.

Those who have already submitted their certificates of candidacy and nominations for party representatives for the anticipated May 12 elections will be automatically recognized as candidates for the October 13 elections. The measure stipulates that no new applications for candidacy or expressions of intent to participate will be accepted by the Commission on Elections, except for seats allocated to the province of Sulu. It has been stated that the subsequent BARMM election after October 13 will be held in 2028, synchronized with the national elections, and every year thereafter. As a result of this postponement, the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) members will continue to serve as interim officials. The BARMM expressed its satisfaction with the Senate's final approval of the measure in a statement. It emphasized that the postponement of the elections is a crucial step in fully implementing the remaining aspects of the transition plan, encompassing key governance reforms and the establishment of structures mandated by the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) and the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB). President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. previously declared Senate Bill 2942 as urgent to address the pressing need of the Bangsamoro transitional government to realign its governance structure. This initiative aims to guarantee that the region's aspirations for unity, inclusivity, and genuine autonomy are realized. The bill will now be transmitted to the Office of the President for his signature. Previously, the Comelec indicated that it would require approximately P2.5 billion if the Bangsamoro Parliament elections were not to proceed on May 12, 2025
