The Philippine Senate has approved a bill postponing the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) elections to October 13, 2025. The original May election date was shifted due to issues arising from the Supreme Court's decision to exclude Sulu from the region, causing anxiety and confusion among residents. Senators hope the extended timeframe will allow authorities to address these concerns and ensure a peaceful electoral process.

WITH the six-month deferment of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao reset to elections to October 2025, senators expressed hope that the period, albeit brief, will allow the Commission Elections and the local officials in the region to thresh out outstanding issues that emerged as a result of the Supreme Court decision to exclude Sulu from the region.

“Mr. President, from the start, it was never a question of if the BARMM elections must be reset. It was a question of when it must be reset. And yes, Senate Bill 2942 offers itself as an answer to that question,” dela Rosa said. Sen. Dela Rosa then drew attention to two issues that he believed authorities should take urgent note of: to respond to this anxiety, and clarify the situation.
