The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has transferred 500 prisoners from the overcrowded New Bilibid Prison (NBP) to the San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm (SRPPF) in Zamboanga City. This is part of a larger plan to decongest the NBP and eventually close it by 2028.
Five hundred persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City have been transferred to the San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm (SRPPF) in Zamboanga City. The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) announced this transfer on Monday, March 17, stating that it is part of the ongoing decongestion plan for the NBP, with the ultimate goal of closing it by 2028. The 500 PDLs departed the NBP at 2:45 p.m.
on Sunday, March 16, escorted by 141 BuCor personnel led by Chief Inspector Henry Avila. The transfer included 56 PDLs from the Maximum Security Camp and 444 from the Medium Security Camp of the NBP. The BuCor further revealed that more transfers are planned for April. Three hundred PDLs will be moved to the Palawan Prison and Penal Farm, 400 to the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Occidental Mindoro, and another 300 to the Davao Prison and Penal Farm. The BuCor emphasized that this systematic redistribution aims to reduce the strain on the NBP while ensuring that all inmates continue to receive humane treatment and participate in rehabilitation programs
