A museum in Seoul dedicated to the history of the Korean alphabet was ravaged by a fire on Saturday. The blaze produced large plumes of smoke, prompting a safety alert for nearby residents. While details about casualties remain scarce, one firefighter was reportedly hospitalized.

SEOUL — A museum in South Korea dedicated to the history of the Korean alphabet was engulfed in flames on Saturday, sending up dramatic plumes of smoke, officials said. The fire erupted on the rooftop of the National Hangeul Museum of Korea at approximately 8:40 a.m. (2340 GMT), according to the local district office in central Seoul responsible for the area where the museum is situated. The blaze generated a 'substantial amount of smoke,' as reported by the Yongsan district office.

Live television broadcasts captured the harrowing scene, showcasing large, dark gray smoke billowing into the sky from the museum's rooftop. While details regarding any casualties remained unavailable at the time, local broadcaster YTN reported that one firefighter had been transported to a hospital. The district office issued a public safety alert, urging residents in the vicinity to take precautionary measures. 'Residents in the vicinity are advised to keep their windows closed and refrain from visiting the area,' the Yongsan district office stated in an emergency text message disseminated to residents. The state-run institution, located in the heart of Seoul, houses an invaluable collection of materials and artifacts associated with the distinctive Korean alphabet, which was first created in 1443. This incident follows closely on the heels of another fire at Gimhae International Airport on Tuesday, where an Air Busan aircraft caught fire, prompting the evacuation of 176 passengers and resulting in seven injuries.
