A 13-year-old boy died in a fire that razed 20 houses in Cebu City. A separate incident saw a man breaking the windshield of a fire engine responding to the blaze.

A 13-year-old boy who was asleep was trapped and killed in a house on Sunday morning, January 5, 2025, during a fire in Sitio Lower Galile, Barangay Duljo Fatima, Cebu City. The fatality was identified as Wrenchford Cahan. FO3 Fulbert Navarro, fire investigator of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Cebu City, in a report said that the fire is believed to have started in the house of one Marites Ybañez.

It was reported on the first alarm at 3:25 in the morning, declared under control at 4:12 in the morning, and completely extinguished at 4:23 in the morning, leaving an estimated damage of P900,000. A total of 25 houses were affected, 20 of which were totally burned and five partially damaged. 30 families or 120 individuals were left homeless. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. About 29 fire trucks responded to the fire. Meanwhile, a man who broke the windshield of a fire truck in Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City during its response to the fire in Barangay Duljo Fatima is facing three charges. The suspect, who is currently detained at the Mambaling Police Station, was identified as Rafael Muñez Villaver, 42, a resident of Sitio Lower Galile, and Barangay Duljo Fatima, Cebu City. The suspect was allegedly drunk when he interfered with the fire truck in Barangay Mambaling and shattered its windshield, which resulted in its damage. Senior Fire Officer 3 Wendel Villanueva of the Cebu City Fire Station said that due to Villaver’s actions, the first firefighter who responded to the alarm was delayed. 'He would have joined us, Sir, but we were scared because of him, and his companions, they were also drunk,' Villanueva said
