AS a keen political observer and counting as one of my areas of interest as a political scientist, the politics of optics and representation, I noticed that there is an inordinate presence of the female gender in some of the ongoing congressional hearings.
Sen. Risa Hontiveros frames her assertiveness with a modicum of gentleness, Rep. Gerville 'Jinky Bitrics' Luistro masterfully crafts her interpellations with well-prepared legal predicates and Rep. Mikaela Suansing focuses on detail and data.Rep. Stella Quimbo steered the meeting of the House Appropriations Committee in the face of Vice President Sara Duterte's open contempt, complemented by Rep. France Castro's dry wit and Rep.
However, if this is a war — and some would like to imagine and phrase it in this manner — women like the Guos, Ong, Baterna and Mascareñas are now once again bearing the burden of the absence of the men who are as guilty, if not more. Meanwhile, Garma has to openly bear the burden of being a mother, something which men who are cited for contempt and detained do not usually carry. Indeed, wars can sometimes be crueler to women than to men.
