Gilas Pilipinas, the Philippine national basketball team, will play Qatar, Lebanon, and Egypt in preparation for the FIBA Asia Cup.
Gilas Pilipinas , the Philippine men's national basketball team, is gearing up for the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers in February with a series of friendly matches against Qatar , Lebanon , and Egypt in Doha. The team will depart for Doha on February 13th, aiming to utilize the camp to integrate key players AJ Edu and Jamie Malonzo , who were sidelined due to injuries in the previous window.
Head coach Tim Cone emphasized that the Doha trip serves as a crucial preparation phase for the FIBA Asia Cup in August, rather than focusing on the immediate qualifying window, as the Philippines has already secured its spot. Cone highlighted the importance of this camp for integrating previously injured players and adapting to playing without Kai Sotto, who will miss the FIBA Asia Cup due to injury. The Philippines' friendly schedule includes facing Qatar on February 15th at 1:30 am, Lebanon on the same day at 11 pm, and Egypt on February 17th at 1:30 am (all times in Manila). Coach Cone previously stated that Kai Sotto will miss the FIBA Asia Cup, while Japeth Aguilar will be absent from the Doha camp due to personal reasons. However, Aguilar is expected to rejoin the team for the February window. In Aguilar's place, Mason Amos is likely to be selected for the camp. Following the Doha camp, Gilas Pilipinas will face Chinese Taipei and New Zealand in away games later this month for the third window of the qualifiers. The Philippines has already clinched a berth in the FIBA Asia Cup, scheduled in Saudi Arabia in August
