SAMAHANG Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) President Al Panlilio hopes that the national team won’t play powerhouse Australia in the preliminary and knockout stages of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Cup set August 5 to 17 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

SAMAHANG Basketbol ng Pilipinas President Al Panlilio hopes that the national team won’t play powerhouse Australia in the preliminary and knockout stages of the International Basketball Federation Asia Cup set August 5 to 17 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

“Australia is going to be No. 1 for sure so we are hoping to avoid them. If we face them, we hope it is in the final already,” Panlilio said. “Although we are already qualified, we will treat our remaining games in the Asia Cup qualifiers as must-win games.” The Australians wrapped up the qualifiers against Indonesia on February 20 and Thailand on February 23.

Panlilio has a reason to be worried about the Australians as they won by more than 50 points thrice—106-51 over Indonesia and 101-48 over Thailand. The Asia Cup qualifiers’ third and final are set February 19 to 25 with Gilas Pilipinas facing Chinese-Taipei on February 20 and New Zealand on February 23—both on the road.
