LAST week, my column was about how inclusion and compassion can play a role in the solution of traffic congestion in Metro Manila.
In this same week, we were all outraged by the viral video of a mall security guard violently shooing away a young sampaguita vendor from the steps of a popular mall as the young girl tried to seek rest and protection from the rain. The incident divided a lot of us. The security guard was condemned publicly, which led to his dismissal from his job of 16 years.
In some instances, we witness traffic enforcers hauling away the meager products that a cart vendor could ever peddle. One cannot ever wish for anyone the heartbreaking cry of these vendors suffering the loss of their livelihood in such circumstances. It is a cry of despair. Most artisanal crafts and trades die when big malls enter the community. Our traditional cuisine, arts and crafts, and even music and traditions are slowly dying because they are not given space to thrive.
