PRC rolls out P6.6M livelihood aid to cyclone-hit families in CamSur
EVEN before Tropical Cyclone “Kristine” struck in 2024, Camarines Sur was already battered by storm after storm. Cyclones such as “Enteng” devastated rice fields and wiped out livelihoods, leaving families in despair.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council or NDRRMC, the combined impact of multiple cyclones caused P2.27 billion in damages to crops, livestock, fisheries and infrastructure.Farmers attempted to replant, but successive cyclones “Ofel” and “Pepito” , compounded by the Northeast Monsoon and shear line, repeatedly destroyed their efforts. Livestock drowned, traders lost their goods and entire communities were left struggling to survive. For many, recovery has been slow and painful, and the struggle to restore livelihoods continues.“The Philippine Red Cross is not only there when disasters strike, we are there long after to ensure that families can recover, rebuild and regain their dignity,” said PRC Chairman Richard Gordon.“Our commitment is to the most vulnerable. We will never allow this to be a forgotten disaster,” he added. On August 29, Philippine Red Cross , in partnership with International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies or IFRC, began rolling out P6,645,000.00 in Household Livelihood Assistance to 443 families in Camarines Sur. Each family would receive P15,000, released in two tranches, to empower farmers, fisherfolk and livestock raisers to rebuild their income and restore their dignity. The first tranche has already been released in the Municipality of Bato with full assistance for both Bato and Bula targeted for release by September 2025.Livelihood assistance amounting to P3,960,000 would be given to 264 families in Bato while P2,685,000 would support 179 families in Bula .Months after the storms, the PRC continues to stand with the most vulnerable, helping families recover, rebuild and rise again.
