VanCAF regularly brings in dozens of creators and publishers from near and far to talk comics and creativity

This year has been a big one for nerd culture. But, while it will be possible to discuss plot points in Avengers: Endgame or the battle for Westeros in Game of Thrones at this year’s Vancouver Comic Arts Festival, the two-day event is more about connecting with creators and seeing what’s new in local and alternative comics. Some of these might not even involve a superhero or dragon .

These days, the in-demand artist/writer is getting out to conventions less and less. His work with Margaret Atwood on the Canadian author’s first venture into the comics medium, Angel Catbird, raised his profile considerably, as did his recent comics adaptation of Vancouver-based SF author Gibson’s 1987 never-produced screenplay for Alien 3. Though known primarily as an artist, he’s currently got two projects on the go, both of which he’s writing.

Prominent out-of-towners include Stratford, Ontario’s Emily Carroll, whose books include fairy tale-tinged horror such as Through the Woods and When I Arrived at the Castle. Toronto’s Ryan North writes The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl for Marvel.
