TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond sits down for a lengthy interview with The Vancouver Sun and The Province editorial board.

Transit ridership in Metro Vancouver has been climbing recently, unlike most big North American cities. But while some observers suggest that’s due to Vancouver’s status as the continent’s only urban centre without ride-hailing services, the head of the region’s transit authority remains confident that the eventual arrival of companies like Uber and Lyft won’t derail that trend.

“It is a double-edged sword,” Desmond said. “Even as we feel good that we’re relieving crowding on some routes, there’s probably more crowding in some respects, because as more and more people are attracted to the service, are we able to keep up? … That’s the challenge.” Many civic leaders are also concerned, as Bloomberg reported last year, that “a growing body of research shows that ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft increase rather than reduce congestion.”

It’s possible, Desmond said, for a city to have both an active ride-hailing industry and thriving transit system, and he believes Vancouver is well-positioned to do so. That’s partially because of the “excellent” transit system already in place, he said, and because of the “smart regulatory system” he expects the B.C. government to bring in for ride-hailing.
