Penny Wong’s visit to China has raised hopes that improved ties with Beijing will pave the way for negotiations to free two Australians detained in China on national security charges.
| and writer Yang Hengjun said on Monday they were optimistic their cases would be raised during Senator Wong’s meeting with her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, on Wednesday.Hopes for their freedom have risen since Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit in November. Although Mr Albanese raised their cases with Mr Xi in Bali, those talks have not led to any immediate action.
It is understood the sentencing was due to take place in October but was deferred again for another three months. Her two young children, who are living in Melbourne, will next week spend a third consecutive Christmas without their mother. Feng Chongyi, a Sydney-based academic and friend of Mr Yang’s who has been campaigning for his release, said their cases should be on top of the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting.
In 2021, China released two Canadians who had been in prison for three years on spying charges in exchange for Huawei senior executive Meng Wanzhou, who had been under house arrest in Vancouver.
