Senator Wong’s visit signifies another major step in the thawing of relations between the two countries and comes following Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s meeting with President Xi Jinping at the sidelines of the G20 in Bali in November.

Director of Economic Security at the United States Study Centre Hayler Channer said Senator Wong’s meeting in Beijing was “very significant” and built on the renewal of ties through similar engagements with Defence Minister Richard Marles and the Prime Minister. “You can see the difference in substance on what we have to talk about with China,” Ms Channer told Sky News Australia on Monday.

Their meeting was the first formal bilateral of its kind since Malcolm Turnbull in 2016 and came after a significant period of tense relations between the two countries.
